Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate is a group of modified carbohydrates made, in this ingredient, from corn starch. The starch is first hydrolysed into smaller pieces and then hydrogenated. The result is not one single compound, but a mixture used when a formula needs a more stable sugar-derived raw material.

It differs from ordinary starch because it no longer keeps the same long, insoluble structure found in the grain. The United States Pharmacopeia defines Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate as a mixture of hydrogenated polysaccharides; depending on its composition, it may also include polyols such as sorbitol and maltitol. That is why similarly named ingredients, such as starch or maltitol, are not automatically the same raw material.

HYDROGENATED STARCH HYDROLYSATE: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate works as a humectant. In everyday terms, that role helps hold water in the product and may help it feel less dry or rough as it is used. It can therefore suit gentle cleansers, skin-care products, or formulas where slip and moisture retention are relevant to the product experience.

One study of baby bath products examined maltooligosyl glucoside/hydrogenated starch hydrolysate alongside other components, including a surfactant and Tween 28; the combination reduced eye irritation in an animal model. This does not show that Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate on its own reduces irritation, and it is not a treatment or performance promise for a particular cosmetic.
