GALLYL GLUCOSIDE is a derivative made by linking gallic acid with glucose. Gallic acid belongs to the group of phenolic compounds; once the glucose portion is attached, it becomes a glucoside. That is why this name may appear alongside other phenolic-acid derivatives on an ingredient list without being the same ingredient as free gallic acid.

GALLYL GLUCOSIDE is a derivative made by linking gallic acid with glucose. Gallic acid belongs to the group of phenolic compounds; once the glucose portion is attached, it becomes a glucoside. That is why this name may appear alongside other phenolic-acid derivatives on an ingredient list without being the same ingredient as free gallic acid.

One cosmetic combination investigated in a study brought together Gallyl Glucoside, Rosmarinyl Glucoside and Caffeyl Glucoside. In that combination, the three derivatives were produced through an enzymatic step that adds glucose to plant-derived acids. The process was described as making the derivatives water-soluble and more stable for formulation, but an ingredient list alone cannot reveal the source material or process used by every manufacturer.

GALLYL GLUCOSIDE: what it does in cosmetics

GALLYL GLUCOSIDE is used in cosmetics for antioxidant and skin-conditioning functions. In this setting, antioxidant refers to its role in systems that limit oxidation reactions, while skin conditioning describes an intended contribution to keeping the skin surface looking and feeling pleasant as part of the overall formula.

The topical study located did not test Gallyl Glucoside on its own: it tested a serum containing all three glucosides for 28 days in 20 volunteers, against a version without that combination. Its findings therefore cannot identify an effect from Gallyl Glucoside alone or support presenting it as a treatment for rosacea or any other skin condition.
