ZINC PYRITHIONE: what it is

Zinc Pyrithione, also called pyrithione zinc, is a compound in which one zinc ion is bound to two pyrithione units. It is therefore different from a simple zinc salt or from pyrithione alone: that pairing creates a distinct substance long associated with scalp-care products.

The English name can appear on labels even where another local name is used. Its zinc-bound structure also sets it apart from other zinc compounds used in cosmetics, which may differ substantially in appearance, solubility, and purpose.

ZINC PYRITHIONE: what it does in cosmetics

In anti-dandruff shampoos, Zinc Pyrithione was used for antifungal activity and to help reduce oiliness and visible scalp flaking. In practical terms, it was associated with formulas for hair affected by dandruff or an oily-looking scalp, not with a guaranteed treatment for every itch, irritation, or skin condition.

A scientific review explains that activity depends on how the formula delivers the substance to the scalp and on the dissolution of its particles. Results from medicated shampoos or formulation studies therefore do not establish the same effect for every product that lists this ingredient.

ZINC PYRITHIONE: conditions and care

In the European Union, Zinc Pyrithione is listed as a prohibited substance in cosmetics. Cosmetic products intended for that market cannot use it, following its inclusion in Annex II of the European cosmetics legislation.
