The name makes a useful label distinction: this ingredient comes specifically from the seeds, not from the pulp, skin, leaves, or a general grape extract. In cosmetics, grape seed oil works as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient. An emollient is an oil that helps skin feel softer and less rough to the touch, while also helping an emulsion spread pleasantly during application.
The oil's fatty acids and other fat-soluble components can vary with cultivar and extraction. Research on grape seed oil also includes food applications, laboratory work, and animal models; those findings do not show that the isolated cosmetic ingredient treats inflammation, wounds, dark spots, or wrinkles. In cosmetics, the plausible result is an emollient feel.
