The name does not mean a whole vegetable oil or a plant extract. It identifies a substance made from those chemical components and may also be described as glycerol triisostearate. That distinction matters because similarly named ingredients can contain different fatty acids or a different arrangement of components.

In cosmetics, triisostearin can contribute to a softer, less rough feel during application through its skin-conditioning role. It also controls viscosity: in practical terms, it helps give body to the oily phase of a formula so the texture is not more runny than intended for that product.
