TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID: what it is

TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID is also known as ecamsule. It is an organic compound used in sunscreens and other products intended to protect against ultraviolet radiation, with particular relevance to the UVA range.

Although its name includes “dicamphor,” it is not a camphor oil or an aromatic plant extract. It is a defined molecule built from two camphor-related portions linked to an aromatic structure and sulfonic groups; that chemical design is what enables its use as a UV absorber in cosmetic formulations.

TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID absorbs UVA radiation. In a sunscreen, it helps build coverage for the part of UV exposure associated with persistent skin darkening and other exposure-induced changes; the finished product’s protection still depends on the whole formula and how it is used.

Human studies and reviews have examined sunscreens that combined ecamsule with other filters and found greater UVA protection in those combinations. This supports its role as a filter within a formula, but does not justify a promise that the ingredient by itself prevents dark spots, aging, or any disease.

TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID: conditions and care

In the European Union, TEREPHTHALYLIDENE DICAMPHOR SULFONIC ACID is permitted as a UV filter at up to 10% calculated as acid. This limit applies to the finished cosmetic formulation.
