The word "acrylates" does not identify one fixed substance. In this family, the acrylic portion may come from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or simple esters of those acids, so the INCI name describes a copolymer class rather than one single recipe. It is also different from free styrene: the ingredient on a cosmetic label is the finished polymer.

STYRENE/ACRYLATES COPOLYMER: what it does in cosmetics

As a film former, STYRENE/ACRYLATES COPOLYMER helps leave a thin, continuous layer as a product dries. In colour cosmetics, that property can help the applied layer look more even on the surface instead of behaving only as a loose liquid or cream.

Its opacifying role makes a formula look less transparent. In practical terms, it can support a less see-through appearance and more even-looking coverage; it does not treat skin, eyelashes, or hair. A mascara-formulation study examined styrene-acrylate polymers together with pigments, surfactants, and other variables, finding that film hardness depends on the whole formulation rather than on this ingredient alone.
