SLMI is not the same ingredient as Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate: the word “methyl” signals a different structure. Research from the University of Manchester examined SLMI/water mixtures, including micelles and liquid-crystalline phases, which are useful clues to how this surfactant organizes itself in a water-based formulation.

In a cleanser, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate helps water spread over skin or hair and gather sebum, dirt, and leftover product so they can be rinsed away. That is why it can appear in liquid soaps, cleansing gels, and shampoos: its practical job is to take part in washing, not to treat a skin or scalp condition.
SLMI’s behavior in water can also affect a formula’s consistency and how water-based ingredients mix together. The available research is physicochemical work with water-and-surfactant systems; it helps explain formulation use, but it does not show a clinical benefit or support promises about acne, dark spots, wrinkles, or disease.
