SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE: what it is

SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE is an anionic surfactant from the acylglutamate group. It combines a portion related to L-glutamic acid with fatty chains described by the term cocoyl, creating an ingredient that can sit between water and oil in a cleansing preparation.

Cocoyl does not identify one fixed-size molecule. In a study that tested this ingredient, its fatty-chain fraction was described as a C8–C14 mixture; this distinguishes it from Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, which is associated with the C12 lauroyl chain. That distinction helps explain why similar-looking names can behave differently in formulation work.

SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE: what it does in cosmetics

SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE: what is it used for in cosmetics? In liquid cleansers, cleansing gels, and shampoos, it helps water spread through and lift away oil, sweat, and residue that water alone does not readily remove. This cleansing action makes the product easier to distribute and rinse away.

A study in human keratinocyte cells examined Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate and two related acylglutamates under laboratory conditions, including UVB exposure. It is useful context for how this surfactant family behaved in cells, but it did not test a finished cleanser or shampoo, nor people using one; it therefore does not show a skin-treatment benefit.

SODIUM COCOYL GLUTAMATE: conditions and care

In the cosmetic uses evaluated, this ingredient should be part of a non-irritating formulation. This condition applies to the finished product, not to the isolated ingredient alone.
