The botanical name Pueraria lobata remains useful when looking for the ingredient, although taxonomic databases also treat it as a synonym of Pueraria montana var. lobata, a member of the Fabaceae family. That naming update does not turn a root extract into a leaf, stem, or seed extract.

In cosmetics, Pueraria Lobata Root Extract is classified as a humectant. In practical terms, that role helps a formula hold water and may support a less rough feel at the skin surface; the result a person notices also depends on the amount used and on the rest of the product.
One study in UVB-exposed keratinocytes assessed Pueraria lobata together with another plant extract, Lithospermum erythrorhizon. Because it tested a two-extract mixture in cells, that result does not show that kudzu root extract on its own prevents photoaging, repairs the skin barrier, or treats a skin concern.
