Proline occurs in proteins and has a biological connection with collagen, but that connection does not turn the ingredient in a cosmetic into collagen or identify the raw-material origin used in a product. The name PROLINE refers to the molecule itself; on its own, it does not show whether it was obtained through a biotechnological route or synthesis.
PROLINE: what it does in cosmetics
In skin-care products, proline may be included as a skin-conditioning ingredient. In everyday terms, this category covers ingredients selected to support a more comfortable skin feel and the appearance and touch a preparation leaves after use; it is not the same as a skin treatment.
In hair products, PROLINE is also classified for hair conditioning. Its purpose is to support the sensory qualities sought for the hair, such as a more pleasant feel and easier handling within the product's intended use. Proline on an ingredient list does not by itself demonstrate increased collagen, wrinkle reduction, or damage repair: L-proline's biological association with proteins is not a clinical trial of topical use of the isolated ingredient.
