Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate is an ester made by joining stearic acid and polyglycerol. The "10" refers to an average of ten glycerol units in the polyglycerol portion, so it is neither stearic acid on its own nor the same ingredient as a stearate with a different number of glycerol units.

Stearic acid is also called octadecanoic acid, while polyglycerol is a chain built from glycerol units. Combining them creates a material with a fatty-acid-derived portion and several glycerol-derived portions, placing it within the polyglyceryl fatty acid ester family.

POLYGLYCERYL-10 STEARATE: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate is used for skin conditioning. In everyday terms, that role relates to the feel a product leaves on the surface of the skin: it can contribute to a more comfortable application and a less rough feel, without meaning that the ingredient treats a skin problem.

A published safety assessment of 274 polyglyceryl fatty acid esters describes this family as being used mainly as skin-conditioning agents and/or surfactants. That work assessed the ingredient family and its safety under the practices reviewed; it was not a clinical trial showing that this individual ingredient treats acne, wrinkles, dark spots, or another condition.
