PINENE
Pinene, identified here as alpha-pinene, is a monoterpene: a small aromatic substance found in plant organisms. It is associated with the resinous scent many people recognize in forest-derived materials and is described as a colourless liquid with a turpentine-like odour. On an ingredient list, this name refers to the compound itself, not to a whole essential oil.
PINENE: what it is
Pinene, identified here as alpha-pinene, is a monoterpene: a small aromatic substance found in plant organisms. It is associated with the resinous scent many people recognize in forest-derived materials and is described as a colourless liquid with a turpentine-like odour. On an ingredient list, this name refers to the compound itself, not to a whole essential oil.
Alpha-pinene can be isolated by distilling turpentine oils, and it also occurs naturally in plants. Related forms exist, including beta-pinene, but they have different structures. The broader cosmetic name PINENE can cover those forms, whereas the identification attached to this ingredient corresponds to alpha-pinene.
PINENE: what it does in cosmetics
In cosmetics, Pinene is used mainly to compose or adjust fragrance. Its resinous note can contribute to a product's final scent or soften the odour of other raw materials. It is not an active intended to moisturise skin, reduce wrinkles, or treat dark spots; its presence is chiefly connected with the sensory character of the product.
It can also serve as an antifoaming ingredient, helping control unwanted bubbles while a formula is made or used. A study that applied alpha-pinene topically to UVA-exposed mice evaluated photoageing markers; that animal result does not show wrinkle prevention or an equivalent effect in people using a cosmetic.
PINENE: conditions and care
In the European Union, Pinene must be shown in the ingredient list when it exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products or 0.01% in rinse-off products. The material must also have a peroxide value below 10 mmol/L.
