METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL
Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, also called bisoctrizole, is an organic compound used in sun-protection products. Despite its long name, it is not a plant extract: it is a substance made to act as an ultraviolet filter. In cosmetic preparations, it can be incorporated as a dispersion of very small organic particles.
METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL: what it is
Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, also called bisoctrizole, is an organic compound used in sun-protection products. Despite its long name, it is not a plant extract: it is a substance made to act as an ultraviolet filter. In cosmetic preparations, it can be incorporated as a dispersion of very small organic particles.
The full name may appear on an ingredient list, while "bisoctrizole" is an alternative chemical name. Knowing both names can help identify the same filter in technical references and sunscreen formulas. It belongs to the benzotriazole family and should not be confused with similarly named filters, because each has its own permitted uses and formulation behaviour.
METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL: what it does in cosmetics
In sunscreen, Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol helps attenuate UV radiation reaching the skin. The benefit a shopper looks for comes from the finished product: this filter is combined with other ingredients to build the protection stated on the label. Its light-stabilizing role also relates to helping preserve formula performance when the product is exposed to light.
One study compared formulas containing this filter with formulas containing other UVA filters, using laboratory measurements and testing in people. UVA protection measured in those formulas rose as the amount of UVA filter increased; that finding describes the tested sunscreens and does not set a fixed protection level for every product containing the ingredient. SPF, UVA protection and directions for use depend on the complete formula and the product label.
METHYLENE BIS-BENZOTRIAZOLYL TETRAMETHYLBUTYLPHENOL: conditions and care
In the European Union, use in cosmetics is limited to 10%. When the nano form is used, additional conditions apply, including no use in applications that may expose the end user's lungs through inhalation.
