Commercial material can be made by reacting manganese carbonate with gluconic acid in water and then crystallizing the result. That origin distinguishes it from plant ingredients that naturally contain manganese and from other manganese salts. On an ingredient list, the term refers to this particular compound, not to elemental manganese or gluconic acid on its own.
MANGANESE GLUCONATE: what it does in cosmetics
In cosmetics, manganese gluconate is used for skin conditioning. In everyday terms, that role is connected with helping the skin feel soft and comfortable to the touch; it does not mean that the ingredient replaces a moisturizer, sunscreen, or dermatological treatment.
Laboratory studies using keratinocytes and reconstructed skin tested manganese gluconate at stated concentrations and found changes in integrins, proteins involved in cell attachment and migration. Those experiments were not clinical trials of a finished cosmetic, so they do not show that a cream containing this ingredient heals wounds, treats acne, or repairs skin.
