LAURETH-2

Laureth-2, listed on labels as LAURETH-2, is an ethoxylated lauryl alcohol ether. Its structure combines a long fatty-chain portion with a portion that interacts more readily with water. That combination helps explain why it can be used in rinse-off products and in formulas that need to bring water and oily components together.

LAURETH-2: what it is

Laureth-2, listed on labels as LAURETH-2, is an ethoxylated lauryl alcohol ether. Its structure combines a long fatty-chain portion with a portion that interacts more readily with water. That combination helps explain why it can be used in rinse-off products and in formulas that need to bring water and oily components together.

It is also known as PEG-2 lauryl ether or diethylene glycol monododecyl ether. LAURETH-2 covers ethoxylated C12–14 alcohols, so the label name covers closely related fatty-alcohol derivatives rather than a name to confuse with Laureth Sulfate, Laureth-2 Phosphate, or other similarly named ingredients.

LAURETH-2: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, Laureth-2 is used as a cleansing surfactant. In everyday terms, it helps water combine with oily residues and carry them away during rinsing, which can be useful in products designed to remove dirt and oil from skin or hair. A cleansing role does not mean that this ingredient on its own treats acne, controls a skin condition, or replaces a treatment product.

It is also classified as an emulsifying surfactant. This means it can help water and oil stay dispersed in the same mixture instead of separating quickly. That supports a formula’s consistency and spread, but it is not, by itself, a promise of moisturising or repair; the result someone notices depends on the full formula and how the product is used.
