Hexyldecanol, also called 2-hexyldecan-1-ol, is a branched-chain aliphatic alcohol. In cosmetics it is an oily component, unlike volatile alcohols that evaporate soon after application or water-based ingredients that mix with the aqueous part of a formula.

The branching is part of this alcohol's structure and distinguishes it from straight-chain fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol. Seeing HEXYLDECANOL on a label therefore does not mean that the product contains the same ingredient commonly used to give many creams a waxy body; they are different materials, even though both belong to the fatty-alcohol family.

HEXYLDECANOL: what it does in cosmetics

In a formula, Hexyldecanol works as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient. In everyday terms, it can contribute to a smoother, more slip-like film on the skin, helping the product spread and making the finish feel less rough or tight after application.

An eight-week clinical study assessed a facial formulation containing 2-hexyldecanol, alongside cell and ex-vivo human-skin tests. Its result applies to that formulation and does not establish that every cosmetic containing Hexyldecanol will reduce the appearance of dark spots or deliver the same effect; concentration, vehicle and the other ingredients affect use.

HEXYLDECANOL: conditions and care

A clinical case report attributed severe contact dermatitis to Hexyldecanol. One isolated case does not measure how often this reaction occurs, but anyone who notices irritation should stop using the product.
