GERANYL ACETATE

Geranyl acetate is an aromatic ester known for the floral-fruity character it can bring to a fragrance composition. The name identifies one specific substance rather than an entire essential oil, so its appearance on an ingredient list does not identify the plant material or the complete fragrance used in a product.

GERANYL ACETATE: what it is

Geranyl acetate is an aromatic ester known for the floral-fruity character it can bring to a fragrance composition. The name identifies one specific substance rather than an entire essential oil, so its appearance on an ingredient list does not identify the plant material or the complete fragrance used in a product.

It also occurs naturally in essential oils. A study of palmarosa inflorescences found geraniol and geranyl acetate among the main components of the oil and observed the conversion of the acetate into geraniol as the plant developed. That relationship helps distinguish it from geraniol: the two are connected in the same aromatic plant material, but they are not the same ingredient.

GERANYL ACETATE: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, geranyl acetate is mainly used to perfume a product. In practical terms, it contributes to the scent profile of products such as fragrances, soaps, lotions and hair-care products, adding a floral, fresh or fruity facet according to the other materials paired with it.

It may also be associated with a fresher cosmetic feel. That does not mean it treats skin, firms tissue or delivers a clinical result; for someone reading a label, its clearest role is still shaping the product's fragrance and sensory experience.

GERANYL ACETATE: conditions and care

In the European Union, geranyl acetate must appear in the ingredient list when it exceeds 0.001% in leave-on products or 0.01% in rinse-off products. This is a labelling requirement at those concentration thresholds.
