Embelia ribes is currently accepted in the botanical family Primulaceae. Older technical descriptions may place it in Myrsinaceae, which accounts for the family difference found in some references. The relevant plant part here is the fruit: this is not an extract of the leaves, roots, or entire plant.
EMBELIA RIBES FRUIT EXTRACT: what it does in cosmetics
In cosmetics, Embelia Ribes Fruit Extract is used for skin conditioning. In everyday terms, that role is intended to support a pleasant skin feel and a well-cared-for appearance after applying a product; it does not, on its own, establish intense moisturization, treatment, or correction of a particular concern.
The berries of Embelia ribes are also studied as a source of embelin, a compound that can be isolated from the fruit. One laboratory study tested a tin–embelin complex in cells and in an antibacterial assay; that material was not the finished cosmetic extract. Those findings do not show that Embelia Ribes Fruit Extract by itself treats acne, infections, dark spots, or skin diseases.
