Dipotassium glycyrrhizate is the potassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, also known as glycyrrhizin. It is a defined chemical substance rather than powdered licorice root or a whole botanical extract, so its presence on a label does not mean that every natural component of the plant is present in the product.

The compound may be isolated from licorice plants in the genus Glycyrrhiza. That connection explains the possible botanical origin, but an ingredient list alone cannot identify the plant species or the production route used for a particular cosmetic.

DIPOTASSIUM GLYCYRRHIZATE: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, dipotassium glycyrrhizate is used as a humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient. As a humectant, it helps hold water in a preparation and can support a less rough feel on the skin; as a skin conditioner, it is included in products designed to leave skin feeling softer and more comfortable after application.

Research on glycyrrhizates also includes laboratory models, animals, and preparations containing other components. Those findings do not show that dipotassium glycyrrhizate by itself, at the level used in an ordinary cosmetic, treats inflammation, dark spots, wounds, or disease. On a label, its most direct role is to support moisture and the feel of the formula.
