The word dihydrate distinguishes this form from dicalcium phosphate without water bound in its crystal form. That distinction does not make it a plant extract or a source of calcium for skin: it is included for the physical behavior of its particles within the finished product.

In toothpaste, Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate can act as an abrasive: fine particles help remove surface debris during brushing. Its oral-care use reflects that setting; as an opacifying ingredient, it can also help make a paste look less translucent.
Studies have included this phosphate as the abrasive in toothpastes, but they compared complete formulas containing other ingredients and different technologies. Those results do not show that the isolated ingredient whitens teeth, prevents cavities, or gives the same result in every toothpaste.
