DIAZOLIDINYL UREA: what it is

DIAZOLIDINYL UREA is a heterocyclic urea derivative used in cosmetic preparations. It is usually present in small amounts to help keep a product preserved while it is stored and used, rather than to provide a visible skin-care effect of its own.

Its name is close to imidazolidinyl urea, but the two are not the same substance. Both are among preservatives that can release formaldehyde over time, so a similar-sounding name does not make them interchangeable for someone checking a label or avoiding a particular ingredient.

DIAZOLIDINYL UREA: what it does in cosmetics

Diazolidinyl urea is used as a preservative. In everyday terms, a preservative helps limit the growth of microorganisms that can change a cosmetic's smell, appearance, or stability, particularly after repeated contact with air, hands, or water once the package is in use.

Laboratory analyses of cosmetic and hygiene products found free formaldehyde in samples containing diazolidinyl urea, which is consistent with its role as a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. That finding explains its preservation role; it does not show that this ingredient on its own treats acne, dark spots, wrinkles, or another skin condition.

DIAZOLIDINYL UREA: conditions and care

People with confirmed contact allergy to formaldehyde or diazolidinyl urea should avoid products containing this preservative. A clinical review recommends avoiding formaldehyde releasers when formaldehyde sensitization is present.
