The name D4 distinguishes it from other cyclic siloxanes, including D5 and D6. In D4, the siloxane units form a ring rather than a long chain, which is why it is treated as a specific substance in European restrictions instead of being grouped with every silicone.
CYCLOTETRASILOXANE: what it does in cosmetics
In cosmetics, CYCLOTETRASILOXANE can serve as a solvent, an emollient and a hair-conditioning ingredient. As a solvent, it helps keep certain components in a liquid phase; as an emollient, it can contribute to a smoother, softer skin feel while the product is applied.
For hair, conditioning relates to softer-feeling strands that may be easier to comb, not to treatment of hair loss, dandruff or another condition. These roles describe its expected contribution to the formula and to the use experience, rather than a clinical promise for skin or scalp.
CYCLOTETRASILOXANE: conditions and care
In the European Union, wash-off cosmetics cannot be placed on the market with 0.1% or more D4. For other cosmetic products, the same restriction applies after 6 June 2027.
