Copper gluconate, listed on labels as COPPER GLUCONATE, is a copper salt of D-gluconic acid. It is not a botanical extract or a copper peptide: it is a defined substance in which copper is bound to gluconate.
It can be prepared by reacting gluconic acid with cupric oxide or basic cupric carbonate. This explains why its name refers to copper, but it does not mean that it is metallic copper powder or reveal which raw material was selected for a particular product.
COPPER GLUCONATE: what it does in cosmetics
In skin-care products, copper gluconate may be included to help keep the skin in good condition in terms of feel and appearance. That is different from promising a visible transformation: it describes cosmetic support for skin condition during ordinary use of the product.
First-aid studies have examined proprietary mixtures containing copper gluconate, magnesium sulfate and urea for box-jellyfish stings. They tested the mixture in experimental models, not the isolated ingredient in everyday cosmetics; they therefore do not support claims to treat skin lesions, wounds or disease.
