CI 47005, also called Quinoline Yellow, is a mixture of sodium salts of sulfonated compounds derived from a quinoline and indanedione structure. It appears on ingredient lists when a cosmetic is made yellow; it is not a botanical extract or a mineral pigment.

The material is not one single isolated molecule. The European specification for Quinoline Yellow describes mainly disulfonates, together with monosulfonates and trisulfonates, plus colourless components such as sodium chloride or sodium sulphate. That mixed composition helps distinguish CI 47005 from other yellow colourants that may look similar in a package.

CI 47005: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, CI 47005 is used to give or adjust a yellow colour. In everyday terms, it can make a gel, liquid cleanser, makeup product, or another cosmetic look yellow, or contribute to a final shade alongside other colourants.

Its role is visual: it colours the product but does not, by itself, indicate moisturising, cleansing, or treatment performance. Finding CI 47005 on an ingredient list is not evidence that a product treats acne, dark spots, wrinkles, or another skin condition; that expectation does not follow from its role as a colourant.

CI 47005: conditions and care

In the European Union, Quinoline Yellow associated with CI 47005 must meet the purity criteria set for E 104. This is a requirement for manufacturing and raw-material quality control.
