CARNITINE: what it is

Carnitine, also called L-carnitine, is a small molecule that contains both nitrogen and an acidic group in the same structure. Here the name refers to the naturally occurring L-carnitine form, not to a botanical extract, oil, or fragrance. Its charged structure helps distinguish it from oily ingredients when it is included in cosmetic preparations.

Carnitine is not the same ingredient as acetyl-L-carnitine, propionyl-L-carnitine, or L-carnitine L-tartrate; those names identify derivatives or combinations with their own composition. On an ingredient list, CARNITINE identifies the substance itself. That difference matters because findings for a salt or a derivative do not automatically describe Carnitine used on its own.

CARNITINE: what it does in cosmetics

In cleansing products, the cleansing and foam-boosting functions mean Carnitine can be part of a preparation designed to lift oil and residue while producing foam. Viscosity control helps keep the product at a consistency that can be dispensed and spread. In skin- and hair-conditioning applications, the intended role is to support a more comfortable skin feel and hair that is less prone to static, within the finished preparation.

A randomized clinical trial followed 90 people for four weeks using moisturizing creams with 2% L-carnitine, 5% EGCG, or both ingredients. Sebum levels fell in the study groups, but that finding belongs to those complete creams and does not show that Carnitine alone, at every concentration or in every product, produces the same effect. Seeing this name on a label is therefore not a promise to control oiliness or treat a skin condition.
