CAMELLIA JAPONICA SEED OIL: what it is
Camellia seed oil, listed as CAMELLIA JAPONICA SEED OIL, is the fixed oil obtained from the seeds of Camellia japonica L. The plant is an accepted species in the Theaceae family, and the ingredient name identifies both the species and the plant part used: the seed.
It is not a catch-all name for every camellia oil. Research comparing seed oils from the genus has found differences between species, and analyses of C. japonica samples identified oleic acid among the major fatty acids. Botanical origin alone, however, does not reveal how the material in any particular product was grown or processed.
CAMELLIA JAPONICA SEED OIL: what it does in cosmetics
In skin-care products, camellia seed oil is used as an emollient and skin-conditioning ingredient. In practical terms, it contributes to the oil phase of a formula and can support a softer, smoother skin feel rather than acting as a treatment for a skin condition.
One formulation study examined this oil in oil-in-water emulsions to establish the emulsifier balance needed for dispersion. That result is relevant to its use in emulsified preparations, but it did not measure clinical benefit in people or establish an effect on acne, dark spots, wrinkles, or wounds.
