In nature, this substance occurs as the mineral fluorite, also known as fluorspar. That mineral origin distinguishes calcium fluoride from plant extracts and from other fluoride compounds that may appear in oral-care products.
CALCIUM FLUORIDE: what it does in cosmetics
In oral-care products, calcium fluoride is used for oral care and plaque control. Dental plaque is the film that builds up on teeth; an antiplaque purpose means helping to limit that buildup as part of a brushing routine.
A clinical study assessed nano calcium fluoride together with an ammonium fluoride solution in a two-step procedure for early lesions. Because the material was combined and used in that protocol, the result does not show that calcium fluoride alone in an everyday product delivers the same effect.
CALCIUM FLUORIDE: conditions and care
In the European Union, oral-care products must not exceed 0.15% total fluoride, calculated as F, when combined with other permitted fluoride compounds.
