BENZYL CINNAMATE: what it is

Benzyl cinnamate is an ester made from cinnamic acid and benzyl alcohol. Its sweet, balsamic scent links it to fragrance materials used to build warm, floral or resinous perfume profiles.

It can occur naturally in balsams, including Peru balsam and Tolu balsam. A chromatography analysis of volatile fractions from Myroxylon pereirae resin also identified benzyl cinnamate among its main components; this shows an occurrence in that resin, not the source of every product that lists the ingredient.

BENZYL CINNAMATE: what it does in cosmetics

In cosmetics, benzyl cinnamate is used for perfuming. In practical terms, it contributes to the scent of a formula and can support a longer-lasting balsamic impression in a fragrance, rather than being included to moisturize, exfoliate or treat the skin.

The Myroxylon pereirae resin analysis examined a mixture of volatile compounds, not a skin-applied cosmetic or isolated benzyl cinnamate. It is useful context for its connection with aromatic raw materials, but it does not demonstrate a skin benefit, an acne treatment or an anti-wrinkle effect.
