ACRYLAMIDOPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE/ACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER

Acrylamidopropyltrimonium Chloride/Acrylamide Copolymer is a synthetic cationic polymer made from acrylamide units and units that carry a positive charge. That charge distinguishes it from neutral polymers and helps explain why it is mainly found in hair-care preparations.

ACRYLAMIDOPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE/ACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER: what it is

Acrylamidopropyltrimonium Chloride/Acrylamide Copolymer is a synthetic cationic polymer made from acrylamide units and units that carry a positive charge. That charge distinguishes it from neutral polymers and helps explain why it is mainly found in hair-care preparations.

It is not an oil, a botanical extract, or a simple salt. It is a polymeric chain made to remain dispersed in a formula. The Portuguese name Copolímero de Cloreto de Acrilamidopropiltrimônio/Acrilamida and the INCI name refer to the same cosmetic copolymer.

ACRYLAMIDOPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE/ACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER: what it does in cosmetics

In shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, this copolymer can help reduce the static effect that makes hairs repel one another or stand away from the head. By forming a very thin film on hair, it can also support a more orderly finish in a styling product, without meaning that every formula will provide strong hold.

A hair-formulation study tested this copolymer in a cleansing product containing surfactants and conditioning materials. In that combination, conditioning oils and dimethicone were deposited more evenly on hair tresses, and friction and combing behavior were measured. That result belongs to the tested formula and materials; it does not by itself show that every cosmetic containing this copolymer will make hair softer or easier to comb.

ACRYLAMIDOPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE/ACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER: conditions and care

For polyacrylamides, European legislation limits residual acrylamide to 0.1 mg/kg in leave-on body products and to 0.5 mg/kg in other products.
